Course Description:

Achieving a Lean Belt designation is not just a resume builder, it is a designation that communicates your level of expertise.  Lean Practitioners with a Black Belt designation are highly sought-after individuals for various leadership and quality management positions.  With the constant changes and dynamic atmosphere of healthcare, it is essential to add evidence based tools to your skill set.  The ability to communicate with executives who create and communicate a vision, with managers who are responsible to mentor and coach staff, and with co-workers as empowered solve problems to make improvements in real time is a much needed talent. 

Learning these new skills will begin your shift towards a Lean way of thinking.  This course will provide you with an understanding and hands on approach to using the basic lean tools of value stream maps and the A3 problem solving format. During the course, you will work through the requirements of obtaining the belt designation of your choice, up to and including a Lean Black Belt.  You will have the support and guidance of a Lean Coach along the way.

Course Delivery Format:

The course is divided into eight (8) modules. Each module must be completed before moving to the next module.  On average, each module can be completed in a couple of weeks with the exception of modules 7 and 8 – those will be competed depending on the pace of your selected projects.  The development of lean skills occurs when knowledge and practice are combined. This Lean Practitioner Self-Paced Certificate Course will put knowledge into practice as participants are immersed in this interactive course. The education will be delivered in a virtual environment using a combination of pre-recorded didactic presentations, asynchronous discussion threads, and a virtual meeting space for a live discussions each month.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course:

  1. Participants will be able to translate lean manufacturing terms into healthcare
  2. Participants will be able to define the concept of ideal
  3. Participants will verbalize the importance of studying work as it is actually done rather than work as espoused
  4. Participants will apply the concepts of the observations process
  5. Participants will identify the importance of gaining a deep understanding of the current state of a process
  6. Participants will observe an organization’s activities
  7. Participants will create an understandable, pictorial description of the Current Condition
  8. Participants will identify the importance of measurements and data as related to processes
  9. Participants will apply measurement concepts in the design of a collection tool
  10. Participants will analyze data elements in a process and formulate a value quotient for the process
  11. Participants will be able to diagnose a workplace “problem” by seeking out root causes in terms of activity specification, connections, and pathways
  12. Participants will identify root cause concepts 
  13. Participants will apply the A3 problem solving technique to determine the root causes of an issue within a process
  14. Participants will be able to envision and draw a Target Condition that moves the organization closer to IDEAL by improving activities, connections, and/or pathways
  15. Participants will design improvement activities as experiments, with explicit hypotheses about expected outcomes and specific outcome measures
  16. Participants will present and explain the completed current state VSM  and one A3 solution
  17. Participants will understand the impact of communication skills on coaching.
  18. Participants will identify the actual cost savings and risk avoidance dollars in completed projects.

HealthTech Management Services D/B/A HealthTechS3 is a Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Provider Number CEP8769 for 16 contact hours. Participant must complete all course work – no partial credit will be given. A certificate of completion will be provided by HealthTechS3 within 30 days of successful completion of the course.

Refund / Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations received in writing prior to the start of the course will be refunded, less $50.00 administrative expense. Registration fees may be transferred to another individual prior to the start of the educational offering.  Individuals who enroll in an online educational course and who open any module content will not be eligible for refunds.

Director of Care Coordination and Lean Consulting

Faith began her healthcare career in the US Navy over 30 years ago. She has worked in a variety of roles in clinical practice, education, management, administration, consulting, and healthcare compliance. Her knowledge and experience spans various settings including ambulance, clinics, hospitals, home care, and long term care.  In her leadership roles she has been responsible for operational leadership for all clinical functions including multiple nursing specialties, pharmacy, laboratory, imaging, nutrition, therapies, as well as administrative functions related to quality management, case management, medical staff credentialing, staff education, and corporate compliance. She currently uses the Lean Methodology as she implements care coordination programs focusing on the Medicare population and teaches care coordination concepts nationally. She is a Certified Lean Instructor.
