The Social Security Act permits certain small, rural hospitals to enter into a swing bed agreement under which the hospital or critical access hospital (CAH) can use its beds, as needed, to provide either acute or skilled nursing care. Medicare Part A, the hospital insurance program, covers post-hospital extended care services furnished in a swing bed. Swing beds provide an opportunity for patients to receive care “close to home, family and friends.”
From admission thru discharge, swing bed patients require support and care from a variety of disciplines, including those that are non-clinical such as finance, business office, and HIM.
To provide the best experience and outcomes, the hospital team, the patient, and the patient’s family or support individual(s) must work together. The webinar will focus on how everyone working together can improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.
Upon completion of the webinar participants will be able to:
- Identify roles and responsibilities of each swing bed team member
- Describe the importance of a customer satisfaction survey for swing bed patients
- Describe at least two new regulatory requirements, including discharge planning
